Throw open your window and let the scenery of clouds and sky enter your room!”
-Yosa Buson

While windows provide practical functions for the home such as lighting, ventilation, and creating the feel of more space, they also serve as portals to the beauty of the outdoors and can add to the style of any room.  There are many different types of windows to choose from, each with their own purpose and added value to the home.

Awning Windows are hinged at the top and open outward and can be placed above a window or door, allowing ventilation and light to enter the room while still maintaining privacy.

Bay Windows are traditionally comprised of a large picture window flanked by smaller windows set at different angles, thus providing multiple views of the outdoors and the illusion of a larger room.  The flow of natural light into a room is increased as these windows allow light to stream in from different angles.

Casement Windows are taller and narrower than awning windows, with the hinges placed on the sides.  They are ideal for placement in awkward areas such as above sinks, countertops or appliances in the kitchen because they are cranked open versus sliding up and down.  Their tight seals make them energy efficient, generally having lower leakage rates than sliding windows.

Double-Hung Windows are great for virtually any room.  The bottom window remains closed while the top can slide open, giving you easy access and great ventilation.

Picture Windows are a great choice if you are looking to incorporate the natural beauty of the outdoors with your home’s décor.  They are stationary windows that provide a clear view of the outdoors and can be combined with other window types to achieve a balance of ventilation and light.

Whether you are looking to re-decorate or to become more energy efficient, focusing on the possible types and placement of windows in your home are great ways to combine style and practicality to create a living space best represents you.
